I am reluctant to take a secondment abroad. Will declining it harm my career?

My company has offered me a secondment which would necessitate moving to a different continent for at least two years. For personal reasons, I am very reluctant to take it. I worry about my career prospects though. I work in business development for a large property developer and I like my job and the company, but will turning the opportunity down adversely affect my future prospects? I do consider myself ambitious, but the distance and time frame involved are just too much. Perhaps I can suggest somewhere closer?
