HONG KONG: Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) today announced the appointment of Allen Ma as its new CEO, succeeding Anthony Tan, who has held the position since April 2008.
Joining as CEO-designate on July 22 and taking office on August 1, Ma believes technology plays a key role in fuelling Hong Kong’s economic transformation. He will draw on his 30 years of industrial and business experience to increase the competitiveness of the city as a regional hub for science and technology innovation while building ever stronger collaboration with the mainland.
“Someone of Ma’s calibre will undoubtedly help further reinforce HKSTPC’s reputation as a breeding ground for science and technology in Hong Kong,” said Nicholas Brooke, chairman of HKSTPC. “Tan has already done a stellar job in steering the corporation to where it is today. We are excited about our continued investment in the future of the technovation industry, in future generations and in the future of Hong Kong by encouraging the growth of green tech, biotech, information technology and telecommunications, electronics and precision engineering, which are key pillars of a sustainable and competitive community.”
Ma’s key focus will be to advance HKSTPC’s mission to provide world-class infrastructure and services and to promote Hong Kong as a regional hub of innovation and technology.
“I’m thrilled to be able to serve the corporation at such an exciting time. Hong Kong Science Park is already home to over 420 tech companies and 9,500 employees, with over HK$825 million raised as angel investment. To date, we have successfully incubated almost 300 incubatees, of which 75 per cent are still thriving,” Ma said.
“Since technology runs through my veins, I believe that the technology sector can bring huge economic benefits to Hong Kong. I’m a firm believer that technology can enable economic transformation, provide opportunities for future generations, and enhance the well-being of societies all over the world.”
A 30-year technology industry veteran, Ma has held senior executive positions within the information and communications technology sector. His past roles include president for Asia-Pacific at British Telecom, vice-president for Asia at the global telecom solutions sector of Motorola, executive director of Hong Kong Telecommunications – subsequently called Cable & Wireless HKT – and managing director of Hong Kong Telecom CSL.
Ma holds an MBA from the University of Toronto and is a fellow member of both the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, UK and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK. He is also a Certified Management Accountant of Canada.
