Last week, we looked at the importance of establishing a clearly identifiable brand. This week we examine some of the factors that underpin a recognisable brand. Remember: trust takes times to cultivate and relationships take time to build.

Vision Set your sights on being the best in your field. You need to consistently deliver your best. Networking is important, as is visibility through activities such as community work, published articles, fundraising events and serving on the boards of local communities, charities or small voluntary welfare organisations.

Friendship Another vital asset is having a strong circle of benefactors and sponsors or endorsers. You have to surround yourself with people who will
encourage – and not “destroy” – you.

Originality Be original and authentic. Have a strong sense of your mission, vision or purpose. Draw up a life statement. Do not be afraid to stand for something that you deeply believe in – and be willing to fight for it.

Self-awareness The first step in personal branding is self-discovery. Know your strengths, talents and weaknesses. Be humble, teachable, even if you are at the top of your game.
