The Master of Science in Sports Medicine and Health Science, offered by the department of orthopaedics and traumatology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, takes a multi-disciplinary approach to educating students, on the proviso that their background relates to sports, according to deputy programme director Dr Patrick Yung Shu-hang.

Students can expect an interactive experience. "Every week, we share cases of patients or athletes recovering from a sports injury (below). As part of the programme, the Hong Kong Sports Institute assigns athletes to give students hands-on experience," Yung says.

He predicts that demand for those who can treat sports injuries will increase, as Hong Kong continues to host international sporting events. "Sports injuries rank as the third most common injuries in Hong Kong, and they significantly impact our economic development," he says.

MSc applicants should have a bachelor's degree from a recognised university with a major in medicine, physiotherapy, nursing, exercise science or other related disciplines. The programme takes two years of part-time study or one year full time, with lectures on weekday evenings. Students may have to attend some sessions on Saturday afternoons.
