Last week, we examined some of the major differences between mentoring and coaching. This week, we take a closer look at some of the tips for successful mentoring.
Mentees should set clear goals that they wish to achieve. At the same time, both parties should manage those goals realistically.
A clear plan should be established on the timeframe for the mentoring process, such as the frequency of meetings. Both parties should commit to the agreed times. Both should stay open as it is important to get to know each other on a personal level. However, what is being discussed and revealed should be kept confidential. Trust is the key to keeping the relationship alive.
Another important point to bear in mind is that both sides should be sensitive to cultural and gender differences. Remember to think about continuous evaluation. Keep a mentoring journal, as mentoring is a great learning opportunity and journey. A mentee must build a network of mentors to get a range of opinions on different areas of life.
Mentoring is a very emotional work at times, so it is important to set clear parameters of engagement without overstepping personal boundaries.
Finally, remember to stay detached and flexible.
