Whether you’re a fresh graduate to land your first job, or a professional looking for a leap in your career, you all can find vast job opportunities at Hong Kong Science Park Virtual Career Expo 2020, which is reporting overwhelming response from 15,000 visitations from talent worldwide and 60,000 page views in just a few hours since it goes live, writes Helen Dalley
Hosted by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), the city’s first and largest Virtual Career Expo for I&T is hosting more than 1,100 jobs from 160 tech companies from March 25 till March 31, with a view to attracting global talent to build an even more robust talent pool in the city.
Mr Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, says: “Despite some of the traditional pillar sectors of our economy have been hit hard in midst of current challenges, I&T never stops but is powering ahead. Our Virtual Career Expo, in a few hours since on live, has reported 60,000 page views and 15,000 visitations from I&T talents worldwide from 45 economies, demonstrating strong interest among talent in I&T.
Talent is at the heart of I&T that drives economic growth and benefits the whole world. While Hong Kong is one of the birthplaces of a great deal of innovation and maintains in its unique position as an international I&T hub to be built in the Greater Bay Area, there is clear potential to boost our innovative capacity further. We aspire to open the door to a new world of possibilities for best talent to come and together shape an even better future.”
As of March 25, 2,000 CVs were submitted through the Fair for over 1,100 job opportunities from four major technology fields: Biomedical Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Smart City and Fintech.
The majority of the jobs are in technology and R&D, such as information and communication technology, engineering and biomedical science. About one third of those roles are looking for fresh college graduates. 75 per cent of the positions are open for bachelor degree holders and 20 per cent are for post graduates or those with doctoral degrees and above.
Among the 160 companies seeking to recruit staff in a virtual manner are two dynamic start-ups based at Hong Kong Science Park: Dayta AI, which taps AI to advise businesses on how to better utilise shop space and deploy manpower, and Sanomics, which provides liquid biopsy genetic testing for cancer patients.
With an average staff age of 25, HKSTP incubatee Dayta AI was established in 2018 by Patrick Tu, Alex Chu and Eugene Ho, a trio of talented entrepreneurs that employ AI to analyse the paths customers take to navigate the store and time spent in different parts of the shop inside and out retail stores via existing surveillance cameras.
The start-up additionally has expertise in using machine vision and AI to analyse the emotions and demographics of the shoppers from footage captured by Internet Protocol cameras, surveillance cameras or network video recorders.
With a team of 15 staff, this young, fast-growing firm is now looking for business and software engineering talent. “Being part of Hong Kong’s largest I&T ecosystem, Hong Kong Science Park embraces diverse cultures and allows you to meet other passionate start-ups founders and exchange ideas.
“We want to meet more young people who have a passion in doing what they love and also crave for improvement, as start-ups are all about constantly creating value,” says Patrick.
Providing liquid biopsy genetic testing for cancer patients so that medical practitioners can tailor treatments for them, Sanomics says the Park has helped it source investors, linked up with hospitals and R&D organisations and provided an environment that promotes I&T.
Sanomics is hoping to fill several positions at the Expo, including Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs), Research Officer and Sales & Marketing Executive at its Hong Kong office. Overseas positions include MLTs in Thailand and Sales Manager in Vietnam.
Applicants should be self-motivated, comfortable multi-tasking and possess a “can-do” positive attitude, say the start-up, which professes to offer an energetic, flexible and fun work environment.
HKSTP provides comprehensive support to start-ups and technology companies so that they could focus on commericialising ideas to market-ready products and solutions. “We believe that the road to success starts from here,” it says.
Gordon Cheung, Regional Sales and Marketing Director, has worked for Sanomics for four years since he joined as an intern. The molecular biotechnology and business graduate says there was five staff and only one product when he joined. Four years in, it has around 60 staff and four branches.
Cheung currently leads the Sales and Marketing team in all APAC markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. He handles projects with multinational pharmaceutical companies locally and regionally, and multinational clinical trials with KOLs in oncology.
Cheung says young people possess many talents but need the right environment to flourish. “Start-up companies are suitable for people that have a passion to change society and are not afraid of failure. I always say we have many years in our career, and spending a few years in I&T will offer you a completely different working experience.”
Dayta AI and Sanomics are just two of the dynamic line-up of companies looking to recruit top talent at this landmark recruitment event for I&T. Companies that are hiring include Hong Kong Science Park companies, current incubatees and graduates from HKSTP’s incubation programmes, SMEs and multinationals. The companies use virtual exhibition booths to share career-related information, and hold on-demand live chats, webcasts and presentations to converse with potential hires. Job applicants can submit their resumes and documents in a seamless virtual environment.
