Queenie Siu Ping-sum of Prudential Assurance Company was promoted from associate financial planner to team manager early this month. She believes that the key to success lies in having professional knowledge and good connections. Siu, who got her job through a recruitment website, talks to Wong Yat-hei.
What is your academic background?
I graduated from the University of Lethbridge, Canada, in 2010, major in international management. After graduation, I returned to Hong Kong to find work.
How do you start your day?
My work is very enriching and full of challenges. I attend different training seminars, and case study sessions provided by the company, to learn about finance and skills necessary for my job.
Gaining practical experience by spending time with colleagues and clients is also important.
What does your job entail?
Positive thinking, good time management, willingness to learn, and discipline are important qualities.
What has been your major challenge?
The major challenge that I have encountered so far is providing financial analysis and solution for my clients.
What have you learned about your chosen career and what are your plans?
I have learned a lot of financial knowledge and technical skills related to my job. I have also learned the proper way of interacting with others by being truthful and trustworthy. My short-term goal is to complete a certificate in a financial course and develop a professional, high-energy team of my own. I would like to become a branch manager in five years.
Any advice for potential interns?
They should grab the chance and gain more experience before starting their career.
